Our Shot: August 6, 2025

Welcome to the 17th edition of Our Shot, a weekly newsletter of actions that anyone (especially kids) can take to resist the Trump administration.

Smaller action: Pay someone a compliment!

A little context: when Leo and I were brainstorming names for this newsletter, one of the ideas we had was to call it "Trump Would Never". We thought it would be interesting to send weekly ideas of things Trump would never do, as a way of framing our resistance against him. We ended up going in a different direction, but we still like the idea of actions rooted in positive things we could never imagine Trump doing (the list is unfortunately long...)

Leo and I were away for the weekend and someone paid him a very lovely (and true) compliment about his interaction with their dog. That made me think how nice it is to connect with strangers in that way, how great it would be if we all spent a little more time making the people around us feel good and more connected with just a few kind words. It's hard to imagine Trump doing that, and often his actions and words lead to the opposite reality.

So compliment someone! Tell them their dog is beautiful, or you like their socks, or they did a great job with something. #Trumpwouldnever

Larger action: Support a Brazilian business, and learn more about why Trump is targeting Brazil with the tariffs that began today.

Brazil will face the highest US tariff rates in the world so far. Take this opportunity to support Brazilian restaurants and businesses near you (we always encourage drinking more coffee). Learn more about the political motivations behind these tariffs, and think about why Trump would care so much about defending former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Share your favorite Brazilian recipes, artists, and music with us for next week's newsletter!

Trump’s Brazil tariffs are more about political revenge: analysis
Trump has set a whopping 50% tariff on Brazilian goods - one of the highest rates yet levied by the US.

Shout Out: Our favorite politician made Trump angry again, doing what she does best.

Senator Elizabeth Warren was on CNBC earlier this week to critique the economic performance of the Trump administration:

“Remember: Donald Trump ran for office saying he would lower costs on day one. Costs of groceries are up, cost of housing is up, cost of health care is up. He’s passing a signature bill to throw people off their health care so he can do tax cuts for billionaires,” Warren said, referring to Trump’s “big beautiful bill.” “Democrats are the people who say ‘billionaires actually should pay their fair share,’ and that we need to focus on affordability for American families. And that’s what we’re fighting for.”
