Our Shot: July 23, 2025

Welcome to the 15th edition of Our Shot, a weekly newsletter of actions that anyone (especially kids) can take to resist the Trump administration.

Smaller action: Subscribe to newsletters from press freedom organizations - groups that actively promote and defend freedom of the press!

Between the recent federal funding cuts to public media and the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it's been a scary week for media. Signing up for these newsletters is a good way to keep track of all of these threats to press freedom - not just the high profile ones - and learn about what individuals and organizations are doing to fight back.

We're starting with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and Freedom of the Press Foundation. If you have others please let us know so that we can share!

And if you haven't yet watched it, the Colbert monologue that kicked off the cancellation is worth the time, as is his later monologue responding to it.

Larger action(s): If you are in one of the many communities impacted by the Republic Services strike, you can take action to support the striking workers. The Trump administration has been consistently anti-union, and any action we can take to support the efforts and power of unions is a great way to resist.

  1. Join striking workers on a picket line near you! You can find information about where events are taking place on your local Teamsters Union website or Facebook page.
  2. When possible, dispose of your trash and recycling without using backup services driven by non-union employees, i.e. at a local disposal center or can and bottle redemption location.
  3. Learn more about the strike and what the workers are looking for from Republic Services, an enormous waste management company. It's easy to be frustrated with a strike that leaves us with uncollected garbage in the heat of summer (I know I've complained about all of the boxes accumulating in our hall) but it's helpful to remember that real people are looking for real solutions from their employers, who have the power to end this strike with a fair offer.

Shout-Outs: In addition to being inspired by all of you each week, we're especially inspired this week by a group of young people who are suing the Trump Administration over its climate and energy policies. Learn more here!

Do you have any ideas for actions people can take? Have you taken an action of resistance that you would like to share? Please email ctsvirsky@gmail.com to let us know - we would love to hear from you!

We are not throwing away our shot!
