Our Shot: July 16, 2025
Welcome to the 14th edition of Our Shot, a weekly newsletter of actions that anyone (especially kids) can take to resist the Trump administration.
Leo's birthday was on Monday, and I have been reflecting on the time around his birth. It was summer of 2016, Obama was president, and a Trump presidency seemed like a distant, terrible idea. I was so excited to vote for a female presidential candidate, and our family canvassed for the first time in New Hampshire the weekend before the election.

That feels like a very long time ago - Leo is 9 now and determined to be part of the resistance to Trump (that first year he napped through most of it). But there are two things I still hold on to from that time that feel relevant for this newsletter: 1. doing something, however small, is better than doing nothing and 2. I want better than this for my children. As always, Obama recently said this more eloquently than I every could:
“What’s being asked of us is make some effort to stand up for the things that you think are right. And be willing to be a little bit uncomfortable in defense of your values. And in defense of the country. And in defense of the world that you want to leave to your children and your grandchildren.”
So with that in mind, our smaller actions this week are in honor of Leo's birthday!
Smaller actions:
- Please share this newsletter with your friends and family! Leo is always excited when we have new members, and we'd be so grateful if you could help us get the word out. You can share this link: https://our-shot.ghost.io/
- We will be making a donation to a cause that Leo selected, supporting and protecting immigrant children. If you are able, please consider making a donation to the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights, an organization that pairs volunteers with staff, attorneys, and social workers to accompany and advocate for unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in government custody.
Larger action: Attend a Good Trouble Lives On event near you.
Tomorrow (Thursday, July 17) will be 5 years since the passing of Congressman John Lewis. Communities around the country are coming together in honor of this anniversary, to continue his fight for justice. Find an event near you at https://goodtroubleliveson.org/.
Do you have any ideas for actions people can take? Have you taken an action of resistance that you would like to share? Please email ctsvirsky@gmail.com to let us know - we would love to hear from you!
We are not throwing away our shot!
